This post is a little off topic but dedicated to a friend of mine going through a tough time with her teen. Parents have a horribly difficult job under the best of circumstances. Dealing with small children can be rough but pales in comparison to handling a defiant teenage. For some teens this is just normal behavior but for others it’s beyond anything that is reasonable and may even require a troubled teen residential program.  Hopefully most of us can just deal with them until they outgrow their teen years but some will require therapeutic boarding schools or possibly something more drastic. A child learns respect from the adults in their life. How they are treated is normally reflected back. Without respect the love can wither under the strain of dealing with those teenage years. You must continue to show respect for your teenager if you want them to return the favor. Some parents don’t want to take the time to understand and deal with their problem kid but it’s important. Teenage defiance can be triggered by constant pressures that your child is facing.  Keep your channels of communication open with your teen. Parents need to try and understand what their child is experiencing in order to understand defiant behavior. Making the effort and taking a little time to understand your teen will let them realize that they can turn to you to talk.

Keep connected. Take an interest in their hobbies, friends and social life. Great communication may not be as easy as you hope, but even the smallest amount of connection is essential.
